15 luxury townhouses
A REFLECTION OF RESIDENTIAL CHARACTER
Saint George involves the consolidation of three existing residential house blocks for a new complex of 15 luxury townhouses in a series of five groups, with a design inspired by the residential character of the surrounding area.
Contemporary townhouse design
Drawing heavily on the streetscape’s residential vernacular, the proposal’s townhouse design employs a repeating pitched roof motif to express the upper storey rhythm of the townhouses. These primary forms are each angled relative to the street alignment, creating a subtle sawtooth pattern overall and allowing each townhouse to be appreciated as separate building forms.
Projecting steel shrouds, large picture windows and juliet balconies punctuate these upper storeys, while the elevations are softened and lent a domestic character through the incorporation of close-spaced timber battens. Face brickwork is also used as a base on the buildings.

Interiors designed for space and views
The internal spaces of the townhouses are based around a dual-aspect approach looking out to garden courtyards on both sides, enabling light and air to flow freely through the open-plan living spaces. This also allows the interiors to integrate with the landscaped spaces beyond.
The kitchen forms the heart of the ground floor space, with the island bench comprising a show kitchen including cooktop, oven and sink. Other functional and storage aspects of the kitchen are concealed behind full-height cupboards. Interiors also designed by Bruce Henderson Interiors.
A common basement solution
The development’s common basement space provides a separate garage with direct stair access to the residence above. This enables the common space at ground level to be conceived as an entirely pedestrian-based space with an emphasis on private garden spaces at both front and rear of all townhouse units.
The basement component is projected slightly above the natural grade in order to create a plinth that the townhouses occupy. Due to this elevated placement, the front courtyards to the street-facing townhouses can maintain a lower fencing height, providing outlooks to the street from the courtyards while maintaining privacy.
