A new master plan design
A BRIGHT FUTURE FOR AN HISTORIC TENNIS CLUB
Following a successful refurbishment to position the traditional tennis club for the future, Bruce Henderson Architects continued its long working relationship with Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club by completing an extensive master plan design to take the club into the next 25 years.
A rich history and bright future
Dating back to 1927, the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club is the original venue for the Australian Open. The Kooyong Classic, held each January before the Australian Open, regularly attracts leading international players.
The new master plan was commissioned around 2012 to ensure the club maintains its tradition as an internationally significant venue for many years to come. Following the successful renovation in 2009, we undertook an analysis of the current functions of the club and worked closely with members and staff to forecast and design for the future.
Master plan design for added member benefits
The highlight of the master plan is an elevated members private dining room and meeting area for unbeatable views of the tennis. A new function room will enable members to wine and dine guests in unprecedented style while overlooking the heritage stadium – the home of tennis.

The master plan includes an extension of the current racquet club and the gym, while two additional squash courts feature spectator seating.
Designing for the logistics of the future

Designing for the logistics of the future
As part of the master plan, current facilities will be upgraded and daily logistics will be improved with a multi-level carpark, delivery vehicle access under the terraces and increased goods storage.
The change rooms will be updated, and a crèche included to meet the needs of current members and their families – the tennis stars of the club’s future.
