Contemporary cultural architecture…

A CULTURAL CENTRE FOR A VIBRANT COMMUNITY

A symbolic tower in the heart of Melbourne’s Hellenic precinct, 168 Lonsdale Street uses contemporary architecture to tell the story of Greek Australia.

A building that bridges generations

168 Lonsdale Street is immediately identifiable as the home of the Greek Centre for Contemporary Culture in Melbourne, bridging past, present and future Greek Australian generations.

The design of the building, which is operated by the Greek Community of Melbourne, overtly reflects Greek historical characteristics and motifs, such as the Parthenon Marbles.

Contemporary architecture to tell an ancient story

The tower is split into two separate vertical strata to reduce the visual mass into more moderated slender forms that capture interest through the use of blue and white glass in the external shade panels. This colouration abstractly reflects the colours of the Greek flag and presents an iconic image of the classic ‘Discobolus’ (Discus Thrower).

Cultural impact on a city streetscape

The building’s 15 storeys house four levels dedicated to Greek events, culture and education, and feature function spaces, education and meeting suites, as well as the Greek Community of Melbourne’s offices. A basement level includes bicycle storage, shower facilities and services space.

Fronting both Russell and Lonsdale streets, the building also features eight levels of commercial office space, a street level retail space, and a rooftop bar. Since its construction in 2013, 168 Lonsdale Street has become an iconic component of Melbourne’s streetscape and a focal point for the Greek community.
