A modern touch for a heritage site…
A REFRESH FOR BRUCE HENDERSON ARCHITECTS
A considered extension to Bruce Henderson Architects head office includes a large roof terrace to complement the existing, iconic old South Yarra post office building.
A respectful extension to heritage architecture
Built in 1893, the heritage-listed former post office at 162 Toorak Road in Melbourne’s prestigious inner-city suburb of South Yarra has been home to Bruce Henderson Architects since 1983.
The design of the firm’s office extension is complementary and, consistent with the Bruce Henderson Architects’ approach to heritage architecture, respectful to the existing building.

Deliberate discontinuity between old and new
The architecture of the extension is elegantly restrained and modest. It celebrates the wonderfully ornate architecture of the original heritage building, viewed through the central atrium.
An internal walkway and walkovers at various levels improve staff connectivity, while creating a deliberate, physical, discontinuity between the old and the new.Â
The office extension accommodates the expanding practice and includes a car park, library, open-plan office space and improved staff facilities, as well as a large roof terrace for entertaining and staff gatherings.
